We will also explore differences in mentor-mentee definitions of independence using case studies, aiming to build mentee confidence and establish trust. To demonstrate the multifaceted nature of independence, mentors will identify both the benefits and challenges of mentoring an independent researcher.

It is easy to get bogged down in the day to day of training a mentee to pipette, code, or do field work, but how can you be certain you are optimizing the professional development of all mentees with diverse career interests?
This session is designed to help mentors and mentees develop strategies to maintain a healthy balance between their mentoring responsibilities and personal well-being. Participants will engage in activities that foster connection, explore challenges to well-being, and learn practical techniques for managing stress, setting boundaries, and supporting one another.

Helping trainees build the skills and confidence to work more independently is an important part of a research mentoring relationship. In addition to providing guidance and advice, helping mentees grow as independent researchers requires an accurate assessment of their current abilities and level of understanding.
