Mentoring is an integral skill not only for academia, but for most careers. The OPA mentoring programs provide a breadth of training in mentoring fundamentals and deep dives into topics of interest through discussion, literature review, and practice. Together, we are transforming the mentoring culture at Stanford, and providing postdocs with skills to take into the world.

Curriculum

The Mentoring Fundamentals (formerly Mentoring in Research) workshop explores foundational skills for effective mentoring. OPA staff facilitates this highly interactive workshop that provides seven hours of training over two consecutive mornings. Designed to foster deep discussion of mentoring, this workshop provides tools that can be immediately implemented in your mentoring practice and seeds a community of like-minded postdocs who wish to become better mentors. Offered approximately every 6 weeks.

Mentoring Lunches: Join us for a mix of small-bite curriculum, journal club, and case study discussions designed to foster community among postdocs committed to mentoring and becoming better mentors. Mentoring Lunches sessions are developed and facilitated by Postdoc Mentoring Coaches, and there's always free lunch!

Mentor Success is programming that is offered on demand to support postdocs mentoring through formal and informal short-term focused mentoring programs. Email postdocmentoring@stanford.edu if you would like to explore offering Mentor Success for your mentoring program's mentors.

Coaching

Peer mentoring coaching will be offered in a variety of formats for postdocs who are facing challenges in mentoring or would like to focus their skills improvement on a specific area of mentoring. Sign up on the listserv or Slack workspace (above) for early access when new offerings are available.
