Thursday, August 7, 9:00am-4:00pm and Friday August 8, 9:00am-1:00pm (required), 1:00pm-4:00pm optional (required for coach applicants), On Campus

Attendance is required for all of 9am-4pm (7 hours) on Thursday and at least 9am-1pm (4 hours) on Friday; 1-4pm on Friday is optional (required for coach applicants). This in-person workshop is highly interactive.

In this 2-Day training, you will learn how to implement mentorship principles. We use the evidence-based Entering Mentoring curricula as our framework. These curricula address important topics and concepts in research mentoring by creating learning communities and engaging mentors in activities, assignments, case studies, and facilitated discussions to solve mentoring dilemmas and share successful mentorship strategies. Topics include: aligning expectations, maintaining effective communication, mentoring remotely, promoting wellbeing and resilience, fostering independence, cultivating inclusion, and balancing the many roles of a PI as mentor. The afternoon of day 2 (1-4pm) is optional and will focus on cultivating coaching practices, which can be applied to your mentoring practice. Participants will gain confidence in working with mentees from diverse backgrounds, add new strategies to their mentoring toolbox, and gain access to valuable resources that will support quality mentorship in their professional careers and within their organizations.

Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Increase their knowledge and skills of evidence-based research mentoring competencies, including aligning expectations, addressing equity and inclusion, maintaining effective communication, and promoting well-being and resilience.
  • Reflect upon and identify characteristics of effective communication to improve communication with diverse mentees.
  • Design, align and clearly communicate expectations for the mentoring relationship.
  • Increase understanding of and concrete strategies to address equity and inclusion and their influence on mentor-mentee interactions.
  • Define and articulate what self-efficacy is and its four sources and practice strategies for building mentees’ self-efficacy in research.
  • Develop practical tools and strategies that you can implement immediately to become a more effective mentor.
