Wednesday, August 20, 12:00pm-1:20pm, On Campus

This workshop introduces you to the craft of writing policy memos for decision-makers in government, think tanks, nonprofits, and corporate policy. Focused on science, technology, and social science issues, participants will learn the purpose, tone, and structure of a memo, with emphasis on professional formatting strategies.

We’ll walk through the standard memo structure and discuss how to write for busy policymakers with clarity, focus, and credibility. Participants will also gain insight into how to develop a novel policy idea, evaluate existing approaches, and anticipate stakeholder responses.

Take-home materials include:

  • A sample policy memo with annotations
  • An executive summary checklist
  • A template memo outline
  • A guide to appropriate use of generative AI for revision support

This session is ideal for those writing on AI, science, climate policy, social impact issues or public health innovation, and all are welcome.
