Position Overview

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare to join Dr. Shriti Raj’s lab. The successful candidate will contribute to research on the design, development, and evaluation of AI-enabled systems in healthcare settings.

You will drive research on clinician–AI and patient–AI interaction, focusing on how systems such as LLM-based tools, decision support systems, and adaptive health technologies are integrated into clinical workflows and/or patient’s lives. The work emphasizes both lab-based studies and field deployments for evaluation in the wild. This position expects experience using mixed methods for research including user-centered design and experience in software development —you will be expected to bridge design, empirical research, and system-building. You will contribute to ongoing projects on clinician-LLM interaction and personal health informatics and will have opportunities to develop independent research directions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to research on human-AI interaction in healthcare, including clinician-facing and patient-facing systems

  • Design and conduct user-centered studies (e.g., interviews, fieldwork, participatory design, usability evaluations) in clinical and real-world health contexts

  • Develop and/or evaluate AI-driven systems (e.g., LLM-based tools, decision support systems, adaptive interventions)

  • Analyze qualitative and/or quantitative data to generate actionable insights for system design

  • Collaborate with patients, clinicians, health systems, designers, and AI researchers

  • Publish in top venues (e.g., CHI, CSCW, UIST, AMIA, JAMIA, Nature Digital Medicine)

  • Contribute to grant writing and interdisciplinary project development

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in HCI, Computer Science, Information Science, Biomedical Informatics, Public Health, or a related field

  • Strong grounding in human-centered research methods (qualitative, mixed-methods, or experimental design)

  • Demonstrated experience with healthcare contexts (e.g., clinical environments, patient populations, digital health systems)

  • Evidence of research productivity (e.g., publications in HCI, health informatics, or related venues)

  • Ability to work across disciplines and communicate with both technical and clinical stakeholders

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AI/ML systems in healthcare, including large language models or decision support tools

  • Familiarity with clinical workflows, EHR systems, or healthcare delivery settings

  • Experience conducting research with clinicians, patients, or care teams

  • Experience deploying or evaluating systems in real-world or clinical settings

  • Interest in translational research and impact in healthcare systems

Required Application Materials:

Please submit the following materials here: https://forms.gle/6cx6Q9MnsBk1duvg7

  • CV

  • Cover letter describing research interests and fit

  • 1–2 representative publications

  • 2 letters of recommendation directly sent to shritir@stanford.edu
