Post-doctoral Scholar in Cancer Immunology — Stanford University
The Kalbasi Laboratory at Stanford University is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to join our interdisciplinary team at the intersection of cancer immunology, T cell immunotherapy, and cytokine biology.
This position offers the opportunity to pursue independent and collaborative research integrating classical immunology with cell and protein engineering, synthetic biology, genetic screening, computational approaches, and advanced microscopy. Projects are designed to be tailored to the scholar’s interests, and additional details can be discussed following initial inquiry.
About the Lab
The Kalbasi Lab is a basic and translational immunology laboratory that merges a curiosity for the fundamental principles governing anti-tumor immunity with a drive to design novel immunotherapeutic strategies for solid tumors. Our research spans both mechanistic and systems-level studies of cytokine and receptor signaling, T cell programming, cancer cell intrinsic immune evasion, and the tumor microenvironment. These efforts linked by a common effort to translate therapies to patients, with a disease focus on sarcoma—Dr. Kalbasi’s clinical specialty.
One arm of the lab investigates how radiation therapy shapes tumor–immune interactions, leveraging preclinical models and clinical samples from phase 1 trials. Our goal is to bridge molecular insight with clinical translation.
Environment and Resources
The Kalbasi Lab is housed in the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Cancer Institute. The lab is also affiliated with Stanford Center for Cellular Therapy and Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy (PICI). The lab is supported by funding from the National Cancer Institute (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), Cancer Research Institute (CRI), PICI, industry collaborations, and institutional support.
Stanford offers an exceptionally collaborative environment with world-class expertise in immunology, bioengineering, and translational oncology, and a vibrant research community that spans discovery to clinical implementation.
Specific Responsibilities include: experimental design, data acquisition, data processing, statistical computation, methods development, data interpretation, literature review and manuscript/grant preparation.
Additional Duties:• Supervision of undergraduates, graduate students and new trainees in the lab.• Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively • Ability to work independently on scientific projects • Assist with preparation of grant proposals • Preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals • Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide • Candidate should have 3+ years research experience in immunology; additional background in computational biology, cancer biology, and/or molecular biology preferred • Experience in image processing and analysis also preferred • The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.• Ability to handle several projects simultaneously.• Willing to help and train various personnel in computational tools and make significant contributions to the design and execution of other laboratory members' experiments.
