Postdoctoral Scholar in Community-Engaged Sexual and Gender Minority/LGBTQ+ Health Research. Post-traumatic stress disorder, Substance Use, and/or Minority Stress Focus

We are seeking a postdoctoral scholar in community-engaged sexual and gender minority (SGM) health research (i.e., LGBTQ+ health research) to work with Dr. Annesa Flentje and the Health Equity Lab at Stanford University. Through this position, the postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to work on a clinical trial of PTSD treatments (lifescape.stanford.edu), and receive mentorship focused on community-engaged research in the domains of PTSD, substance use, and/or minority stress among SGM people. Additional projects may focus on The PRIDE Study (pridestudy.org) or biological mechanisms of stress including epigenetics.

Research opportunities will include collaboration on projects, data analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of results through presentations and manuscripts. Scholars will work with Dr. Annesa Flentje as a primary mentor during their postdoctoral period, as well as other mentors and staff from the PRIDE Lab and clinical trial team and/or Stanford University. Scholars may participate as a provider in the clinical trial as relevant, but the experience is primarily research focused. Training opportunities will include learning about community-engaged research methods, receiving guidance on grant writing and research dissemination, and comparative effectiveness research. Scholars will initiate and support investigations related to or adjacent to LIFESCAPE and will be integrated into a community of multidisciplinary SGM health researchers and mentors. There may also be opportunities to apply for grant funding during the postdoctoral position, with support from the primary mentor.

The specific research focus of the postdoctoral scholar is on PTSD, substance use, stress, and/or minority stress among SGM people.

The Health Equity Lab is led by Annesa Flentje, PhD, Professor at the Stanford Prevention Research Center at the Department of Medicine and clinical psychologist. The lab is dedicated to understanding the intricate relationships between stress, coping, and human health. Bridging the fields of clinical psychology, molecular biology, epidemiology, and public health, our team conducts translational research investigating the molecular impacts of stress and develops new, evidence-based, affirming mental health interventions to improve outcomes like substance use, mood, and anxiety disorders.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree with evidence of research productivity (e.g., publications, presentations).

  • Evidence of capability with research methods and analysis.

  • Interest and some knowledge in SGM health.

  • Completed all doctoral requirements (PhD within the last 3 years or MD within the last 6 years).

  • Will not be appointed at another institution or employed elsewhere concurrently with the Stanford postdoctoral appointment.

  • Have less than 51 months of previous postdoctoral research experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SGM health research, SGM communities, substance use, PTSD, or minority stress research.

  • Experience with STAIR Narrative Therapy or Cognitive Processing Therapy or genetics or biological research could open up additional opportunities.

Required Application Materials:
  • Cover Letter
  • CV
