The Stanford University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scholar to join a growing research program focused on pediatric type 1 diabetes, health disparities, and improving access to high-quality diabetes care and technology.

Our research examines the factors at the patient, family, provider, and health system levels that shape access to, adoption of, and sustained use of diabetes technology and other aspects of diabetes care. Our work draws on clinical and electronic health record data, survey and administrative data, qualitative and mixed methods, and policy-relevant research questions.

We are seeking a PhD or DrPH-trained researcher with expertise or strong interest in health disparities, sociology, social epidemiology, epidemiology, health services research, public health, or a related field. Candidates with training in sociology will have opportunities for co-mentorship with Stanford sociology faculty.

The scholar will contribute across a portfolio of observational, mixed-methods, and intervention research, with substantial opportunity to lead analyses and manuscripts and to develop new research questions. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring strong scientific writing and analytic skills, a demonstrated record of research productivity, and the ability to take ownership of projects from study design through dissemination.

Research opportunities

The postdoctoral scholar will have opportunities to:

  • Lead first-author manuscripts and analyses using clinical, electronic health record, survey, administrative, qualitative, and/or mixed-methods data.

  • Develop research questions and analytic approaches within ongoing studies and areas of substantive interest.

  • Conduct and interpret analyses independently, with collaboration from biostatistical and methodological colleagues as appropriate.

  • Contribute to studies across the research lifecycle, including study design, protocol development, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and dissemination.

  • Develop and pursue independent research questions related to health disparities, access to care, diabetes technology, health services, pediatric health, or related areas.

  • Present research at national meetings and contribute to grant applications and development of new studies.

  • Collaborate with clinicians, statisticians, research staff, trainees, and community partners across interdisciplinary projects.

  • Mentor research staff and trainees in areas of expertise.

The scholar will work across multiple projects and will have the opportunity to identify connections across studies, generate new questions, and develop analyses and manuscripts that extend the broader research program. We are looking for someone who can independently identify the next steps needed to move a project forward and exercise good judgment about priorities across a portfolio of work.

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPH, or equivalent doctoral degree in sociology, public health, epidemiology, health services research, social sciences, or a related field by the start of the appointment.

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Strong scientific writing skills and experience developing peer-reviewed manuscripts

  • Experience designing and conducting independent research

  • Experience with quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research

  • Experience working independently with research datasets and developing analytic approaches

  • Training or experience in health disparities, social epidemiology, health services research, pediatric health, chronic disease, diabetes, or related areas

  • A record of peer-reviewed publications demonstrating substantive contributions to research

  • Experience managing multiple projects and prioritizing work independently

  • Developing an independent research program and pursuing future grant funding

Experience with electronic health record or longitudinal clinical data, survey or administrative data, implementation science, qualitative methods, or causal inference is welcome but not required. Prior experience in pediatrics or diabetes is also not required. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring strong methodological and substantive training that can be applied to clinically grounded questions in health disparities and health services research.

Research environment and career development

The scholar will join an interdisciplinary research team within Stanford Pediatrics, with opportunities for collaboration across Stanford and with external research and community partners. The research portfolio includes studies of diabetes technology access and outcomes, disparities in diabetes care, patient and family experiences, provider and health system factors, and approaches to improving the delivery of care.

The position is designed to support development toward research independence while providing opportunities to make substantive contributions to ongoing projects. The scholar will have opportunities to lead first-author publications, present at national meetings, develop independent research questions, contribute to grant applications, and build collaborations across disciplines. Mentorship will be tailored to the scholar's research interests and career goals, with increasing independence over the course of the appointment.

We are particularly interested in candidates who see this position as an opportunity to build a distinct area of scholarship within the lab’s research program. The goal is for the scholar to develop a strong publication record, lead research studies, and establish a developing line of work that can serve as the foundation for future independent research and funding.

Prior experience in diabetes is not necessary. The most important qualifications are strong research training, scientific writing and analytic skills, substantive interest in health disparities and health services research, and evidence of the ability to develop and lead research.
