Postdoctoral Fellowships

The process of applying for research funding supports not only good research, but also develops communication skills and independent thinking. Stanford can help  identify funding sources, develop proposals, and manage funding. Note that regardless of funding source, all postdocs must receive at least the minimum salary, and are entitled to benefits.  The faculty sponsor is required to supplement any  fellowship that does not meet the minimum salary and/or does not provide funding explicitly directed to benefits coverage.

Additional Opportunities Outside Stanford:  Fellowship opportunities also exist outside of Stanford University.

Policy for Fellowship Support

Writing the Application

The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) and the School of Medicine Research Management Group (RMG) provide information and resources for fellowship applications.

Many applications require a description of additional educational opportunites for Stanford postdocs, which can be found here.

Note:  The Expanded Pilot PI Waiver supports applications from postdoctoral fellows for R01-type grants that require Principal Investigator status at the School of Medicine.  Contact the Research Management Group for more information and for the application process and deadlines.

The Stanford BioSciences Grant Writing Academy provides workshops, seminars, and on-line resources to support proposals for fellowship and career development awards. While primarily aimed at NIH mechanisms, the programs are equally valuable for applications to other agencies and foundations.
