Required Assignment:

The form that participation takes, and the importance of it for teaching, can vary from discipline to discipline. So, in addition to reading the assigned paper, search the literature on teaching and learning that focusses on your discipline and find (and read) a paper that looks at student participation. Then, reflect on and answer the following two questions:

  • What activities are students given credit for doing that are also associated with, or presented to students as examples of, participation?
  • In general, what activities can, and do, students engage in that promotes their achievement of learning outcomes? Try to identify at least 3 activities that you did not list in response to question A.
