Mentoring 101: How to Get What You Need to Thrive in the Academy

In this full day workshop, we challenge the conventional wisdom about mentoring within academia and present a new framework to help you re-imagine how mentoring works. All participants will map their current mentoring network, identify the pressing areas of need that are not being met, and create a plan to expand their existing mentoring network.

This workshop is open to graduate students, postdocs, and early-career faculty.

Mentoring Monday: Aligning Expectations

What expectations do you have of your mentee? Have you considered what expectations your mentee has of you? A mentoring compact is a tool for aligning expectations in a mentoring relationship.

During this workshop, we’ll introduce mentoring compacts by differentiating them from a lab manual, discuss how they can be very powerful for mentors and mentees, and begin creating a mentoring compact.

Research integrity is essential in any discipline. What ethical principles guide your work? How can you model ethical awareness for your mentee?

In this workshop, postdocs will consider ethical issues in research groups and discuss the crucial role of power dynamics and its potential to influence behavior.
