Online BISNet Enrollment Instructions

You are not automatically enrolled in the Blue Cross Medical or Delta Dental and/or Vision Service Plan (VSP). You must go online to enroll yourself (using the BISNet benefits system) within 31 days of your appointment . Failure to do so will result in the delay of your medical coverage and will prevent you from enrolling in the dental plan.

If you enroll within 31 days of your date of appointment, your medical coverage begins on the date of your appointment. Dental and vision coverage always begins the first day of the following month. For example:

  • Appointment date July 3: medical coverage begins July 3, dental and vision coverage begins August 1.

  • Appointment date July 1: medical coverage begins July 1, dental and vision coverage begins August 1.

A Step-by-Step Guide to the Enrollment Process

1. Log On to BISNet (the online enrollment tool)

  • Go to BISNet online at https://www.bisnet.com/stanford.asp.

  • On the log on screen, select "Postdoctoral Scholar" as the login type.

  • Enter your Stanford University Postdoc ID number as your "Login Name" and "Password" (do not include the zeros at the beginning of your ID number).

  • Click on "Login."

  • Read the information about the online enrollment process. Click on "Next" to begin.
  • The first time you log on you will be prompted to change your password. Click on "Finish."

2. Review your profile

  • Update missing or incorrect data in your profile. Input your HOME address. Click on " Save Profile Changes" at the bottom of the page to save and move to the next screen.

  • If your Social Security Number (SSN) is unavailable, provide your SSN as soon as possible to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs or update your profile once you receive it. Your profile will remain in "pending" status until you SSN is received.

3. Add Dependents

  • If you have dependents, add them by clicking on the "Add Dependent" button.
  • Click on "Save Dependent Data " at the bottom of the page. If you have no dependents or if you done adding dependents, click on "Finished Adding Dependents."

4. Review Available Plans

  • If you are ready to make your enrollment selections click “ Select Your Plans Now.”
  • If you want to research your options Click on the “ View Available Plans” button to display a list of plans that are available to you. Click on the button corresponding to the plan you wish to review. Plan provisions will be outlined in a table. If you click “SPD” or “Summary” you will be linked to a summary of plan provisions. If you click “Prices” you will be linked to your costs. To return to the list of plan offerings, click “ Back to View Plans.”
  • When you are done viewing plans and are ready to make your enrollment selections, click “ Select Your Plans Now.

5. Plan Selection (Enroll)

  • From the “ Select Your Plans Now” button you will be taken through the Plan Selection Wizard. Click “ Next” to continue through the plan selection process.
  • Use the drop-down boxes to see the plan options available to you. Select the plan in which you would like to enroll.
  • Click “ Next” after making your plan selections for you and any dependents.

6. Plan Selection-Based Questions

  • If you have elected the Blue Cross HMO Medical Plan, the BISNet enrollment system will prompt you to choose a Primary Medical Group (PMG) or Primary Care Physician (PCP).
  • Click on “Available Physicians” to go to www.bluecrossca.com/clients/supostdocs
  • At the Blue Cross Provider Directory, Under “Providers in California” – Click: “HMO.
  • At the drop down menu, select “Blue Cross HMO ( California Care)” – Click: “Continue.
  • At “Provider Type”, use the drop down menu to choose “Medical Group/IPAs.”
  • Enter your zip code for work/home or home address, click “Find Providers Now.”
  • Choose a Medical Group/IPA with an “Open” practice.
  • Click on the “Name of the Medical Group/IPA.”Input the “Medical Group/IPA Enrollment ID (Paper)” in the Primary Care Physician ID/Medical Group Code field in the BISNet system.
  • Make note of the Medical Group/IPA Enrollment ID. Call Blue Cross at 1-800-365-0020 to change your Primary Medical Group or PCP. All added dependents can have the same or different Medical Group/PCP.
  • If you do not enter a Primary Medical Group in BISNet, Blue Cross will assign you to a Medical Group nearest to your home address.
  • To select a Stanford Medical Clinic as your Primary Medical Group, Click “Stanford HMO Medical Group Provider” under “Providers in California” on the Blue Cross Provider Directory. Search the document to locate the Primary Medical Group Code.
  • If you are female, please remember that your Primary Care Physician and OB/GYN MUST be participating in the same Medical Group.
  • Click “Next” after answering your Primary Medical Group/Physician ID question.

7. Adding Beneficiaries

  • Dependents listed are automatically included as beneficiaries. Add as many primary and contingent beneficiaries as you want, percentage must equal 100%.
  • To add a beneficiary, select “ Add Beneficiary” button. To change a beneficiary’s information, click on the name of the beneficiary you want to change. To delete a beneficiary, select the remove box next to the name of the beneficiary you want to delete. Dependent beneficiaries cannot be deleted.
  • When all your beneficiaries have been entered, select primary and/or contingent benefit percentages for each one, select the “ Next” button to complete the beneficiary process.

7. Adding Beneficiaries

  • Dependents listed are automatically included as beneficiaries. Add as many primary and contingent beneficiaries as you want, percentage must equal 100%.
  • To add a beneficiary, select “ Add Beneficiary” button. To change a beneficiary’s information, click on the name of the beneficiary you want to change. To delete a beneficiary, select the remove box next to the name of the beneficiary you want to delete. Dependent beneficiaries cannot be deleted.
  • When all your beneficiaries have been entered, select primary and/or contingent benefit percentages for each one, select the “ Next” button to complete the beneficiary process.

8. Confirm Your Selections

  • This screen lists all of the plans in which you’ve just elected and your costs of coverage.
  • To change any plan selection, click “Back” until you reach the appropriate screen that you want to correct. To return to the confirmation page, click “ Next” on each screen. If you click on you browser’s forward arrow instead of “Next,” your selections will not be recorded.
  • Click “ Finish” to save your plan elections. Choose “ Print Forms” to download necessary forms if you are enrolling a dependent for the first time or to review pending information.

9. Complete the Enrollment Process

  • On the “Print Forms” page, a pending box will appear if any information is missing (i.e., SSN, PCP/PMG ID#). Use the links in the pending box to return to the appropriate screens to update missing information (if SSN is not available, please provide ASAP).
  • Make sure you click “Next” or “Save” on every screen on which you make changes to your plan selections. If you click on your browser’s forward arrow instead of “Next” your selections will not be recorded. Print and submit any necessary forms.
  • If you owe any monthly premiums, you will need to print out the “Automatic Bank Deduction Authorization Form,” attach your voided check and return the form to the address listed on the form.
  • Logout once you’ve finished your enrollment.
