Postdoctoral position in Computational Immunology

We are looking for two motivated postdoctoral researchers to work on human macrophage biology in the Department of Pathology at Stanford. Successful candidates will use a combination of scRNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, and highly-multiplexed imaging to understand how human macrophages respond to the early stages of cancer development. They will be a part of an interdisciplinary team of immunologists (Magda Matusiak), pathologists (Matt van de Rijn, Rob West), and star Stanford statisticians (Trevor Hastie, Rob Tibshirani)! The aim of this project is to reveal the driving forces of macrophage polarization and to identify early-detection cancer biomarkers. It builds on our previous research revealing functional markers of human macrophages (Matusiak et al., Cancer Discovery, 2024; Luca, Steen et al., 2021, Cell), efforts to reveal biomarkers of in situ breast cancer progression (Strand et al., Cancer Cell, 2022; Risom et al. Cell, 2022), and response to PD-1 blockade (Phillips, Matusiak, et al, Nature Communications, 2021).

We do research at the forefront of spatial biology and offer training in immunology, human histology, statistics, computer vision, grant writing, and scientific publishing. Other projects in the lab study macrophage spatial biology in the context of human development, reproduction, chronic inflammation, response to immunotherapy, and TME.

Required Qualifications:
  1. A doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) conferred by the start date.
  2. Proficiency in R/Python
  3. Experience with scRNAseq, and/or spatial proteomic/transcriptomic data analysis
  4. Growth mindset and ability to adopt new data analysis modalities
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Required Application Materials:
  1. CV
  2. Research Statement describing (a) Your research accomplishments, (b) Your broader research interests, and (c) why you are interested in working with us
  3. A sample of data analysis code (published or unpublished)
  4. A representative writing sample (published or unpublished)
  5. Contact information for three references
