The Cyert lab (https://cyertlab.com/) aims to discover and elucidate new Ca2+-regulated signaling pathways by studying the calcineurin phosphatase. Calcineurin is activated by Ca2+ and calmodulin, and thus dephosphorylates proteins only when Ca2+ signaling is triggered by a hormone, growth factor, neurotransmitter etc. Recent work identified calcineurin substrates systematically throughout the human proteome and identified many new roles for calcineurin including at the nuclear pore complex, where it regulates nuclear transport by dephosphorylating nuceloporins. - Familiarity with any or all of the following would be helpful: cell cutlure, imaging, molecular techniques including Crspr/Cas9 editing and basic biochemistry including protein purification.
