The Stanford Center for Carbon Storage is looking for a post doc with prior experience using Aspen Plus, a chemical process simulator used to mathematically model chemical processes, from unit operations to full chemical plants and refineries. Project duration is expected to be a year and the candidate selected will join a vibrant group of researchers in the area of carbon capture and storage. The post doc will use Aspen Plus (or equivalent software) to model the performance of a few key industrial and power sector facilities both before and after a carbon capture retrofit as well as electrification of key process equipment. The overall goals of the project are to better understand the parasitic load of CCS after a retrofit, minimize this load, as well as quantify the overall lifecycle emissions. The facilities of interest include a hydrogen SMR, a cement plant, and a natural gas combined cycle power plant.
The project involves the following tasks for each facility type:
- build (or obtain from DOE literature/websites) a process/facility engineering model and evaluate all energy inputs and emissions,
- identify and evaluate different locations within the facility that capture equipment could be added,
- add carbon capture equipment to model and assess impact on energy use and emissions,
- perform full LCA,
- optimize operations to minimize emissions and energy requirements, and
- document results for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
