The Katherine McCormick Committee
to Support Women in Medical Careers

Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards

Submission Deadline: June 21, 2011 by 12:00 PM
Notification of Awards: Mid August 2011
Award start date: September 1, 2011
Funding Period: September 2011 to August 2012

Applications are now being solicited for support from the Katherine McCormick Fund to support women in medical careers for the academic year 2011-2012. Eligible applicants must be men or women pursuing careers in academic medicine at Stanford University, School of Medicine (SOM).

Awards will be made for one-year postdoctoral fellowship support to candidates who possess a MD and/or PhD. Awards are typically $15,000, plus an optional travel supplement of $1,000 (travel supplement may be changed to fellowship funding at the end of the fellowship, upon request). Eligible applicants must be men or women who have already been appointed as a Postdoctoral Scholar, whose faculty sponsor is in the School of Medicine and is not an acting or consulting professor. The fellowship award will be made as stipend; no salary payments are allowed (scholars with H1-B, TN, and O-1 visas are ineligible). In addition to choosing those individuals with outstanding scientific track records and a carefully developed and realistic research project, preference will be given to those candidates with limited current or prospective financial support over the next year.

The Katherine McCormick Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee will hold its fellowship and grants selection meeting in late July. Funding must start no later than September 1, 2010.

Postdoctoral scholars may receive only one award during their time at Stanford University. Former applicants that were not selected may resubmit new applications in future award cycles.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Only individuals who are currently appointed as Postdoctoral Scholars are eligible to apply.

2. The applicant may be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or foreign national. Foreign scholars must be holders of J1 visas; holders of H1B, TN, O-1 or other visas are ineligible.

3. The scholar's faculty mentor must have a primary appointment in the School of Medicine. Acting, consulting and courtesy faculty are not eligible.

Additional Application Guidelines:

1. Faculty members may not have more than one funded McCormick fellow at a time.

2. A faculty member may not serve as mentor/sponsor on more than one fellowship application per cycle.

3. Funding is limited to stipend support paid directly to the postdoctoral scholar. Awards will not be made on a retroactive basis (i.e. for meetings attended prior to September 1, 2010).

4. If the proposed research will involve animal and/or human subjects/protocols, the applicant should apply for the required protocols at the time of submission and not wait to be funded. Funding of the fellowship cannot begin until all protocols are approved. The protocols need to list the School of Medicine Katherine McCormick Committee to Support Women in Medical Careers Postdoctoral Fellowship as a possible funding source.

Selection Criteria:

The Katherine McCormick Postdoctoral Fellowship selection committee assigns priority scores to applications based on the following criteria:

1. qualifications

2. career track

3. proposal quality

4. individuals who encourage or support (through professional association) the advancement of women in medicine and/or medical research

5. individuals mentoring a woman, through professional association, for career development

Funding Requirements and Guidelines:

Fellows are awarded up to $15,000 per year for stipend support only, plus an optional travel supplement of $1,000 (travel supplement may be changed to fellowship funding at the end of the fellowship, upon request). If the postdoctoral scholar currently has other fellowships, or has applied to fellowships that may be awarded during the Katherine McCromick Fellowship award year, full disclosure of the amounts and dates of the other award(s) must be made on the BioSketch form. Applicants should be prepared for the Katherine McCormick Fellowship to begin on time and be awarded for one full calendar year. Funding starts September 1 and may be adjusted below $15,000, but must be disbursed in 12 equal payments.

The recipient must be in active postdoctoral scholar status at the School of Medicine through the duration of the award.  The award is suspended during any leaves of absence, including maternity leave, but the funds are not forfeited.  Arrangements for re-distribution of the remaining funds or extension of the award year are typically made.

The Katherine McCormick Fellowship must be made in the form of a stipend to the scholar.  The award may not be used towards research expenses, health insurance or tuition payments.

The Katherine McCormick Fellowship is intended to offset existing support from other sources at Stanford rather than add to existing support.  The Katherine McCormick Fellowship is meant to replace department budgeted funds and not be paid in addition to the normal level of pay.  Postdocs emerging from residency or other clinical training programs may be paid at current PGY levels, if this is the policy of the department.

In accepting this award, the postdoctoral scholar’s home department is responsible for adhering to the funding requirements and guidelines.  If guidelines are not met, the postdoctoral scholar may be asked to return all or part of the fellowship, if any

Other Concurrent Fellowship Support and Combination of Awards:

If a Katherine McCormick Fellowship recipient receives another fellowship award from Stanford or from an outside agency, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs must be notified.  If the two awards combined do not exceed the total support committed to the scholar as part of the terms of appointment, the Katherine McCormick Fellowship may be retained.  If the two awards combined exceed the agreed-upon support for the scholar at the time of reviewing the Katherine McCormick Fellowship application, the Katherine McCromick Fellowship award should be adjusted accordingly, up to a complete forfeiture of the award.   If an outside award or other funding is used that exceeds the research or GME pay levels, the Katherine McCormick Fellowship must be declined/turned back unless an exception is granted.

The Fellowship Committee expects postdoctoral recipients of the award and their faculty mentors to report in writing the receipt of additional external support to the scholar during the award period or towards the same research proposal or conference trip, via e-mail to postdocaffairs@stanford.edu.
