Description: The School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University is currently accepting applications for two postdoctoral fellows in the Natural and Social Sciences to serve as teaching fellows at the Asian University for Women (AUW) http://www.asian-university.org/ in Bangladesh. The term of appointment is for the 2009-2010 academic year, with training beginning in July, 2009.
This is a unique opportunity for scholars with an interest in teaching to participate in the inaugural year of instruction at AUW. The University is committed to better preparing disadvantaged women of high ability and potential through a world-class education that will encompass both the progressive liberal arts & sciences and requisite professional training in order to further the intellectual and professional development of eligible women.
The postdoctoral fellows will be responsible for team-teaching with AUW faculty members the equivalent of 2 core introductory courses per semester, with 25 students per course. The goal of the first year curriculum is to gain experience applying disciplinary methods and thinking to real life problems that are impacting the world by examining a main theme from the perspective of each discipline. Potential themes include: Water, Food/Agriculture, and Climate Change in the Natural Sciences or Economics of Inequality in Asia, Global Woman’s Health, and Global Security in the Social Sciences.
Applicants should possess a Stanford PhD, or have served in a postdoctoral position at Stanford University. A research background and interest in teaching are required. International experience, particularly in connection to Asia, is preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to involving students in scholarship through active learning.
