The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs established the Postdoc FHF in 2011 (formerly known as the “Emergency Grant-in-Aid Fund”) to assist postdoctoral scholars who have significant financial difficulty paying their healthcare premiums. Applications to the FHF are typically accepted on a quarterly basis (once per quarter). Once awarded, you need not re-apply; those awarded a subsidy in 2011 will continue to receive the subsidy in 2012.
The FHF aims to assist with the increase in healthcare premiums for postdocs who select Postdoc+child(ren) or Postdoc+Family coverage when they enroll in Stanford postdoc health plans. This financial aid program was extended to 2012 and the aid amounts were increased in light of the increases in healthcare premiums in 2012. For those who are continuing from 2011 into 2012, the subsidy amounts were adjusted up in 2012.
Awards are made as a monthly subsidy that reduces the monthly medical premium billed to the postdoc on the University bill managed through the Student Services Center.
Award amounts are made for a period of up to December 31, 2012 or the end of the postdoctoral appointment, whichever comes first. Amounts may be reviewed regularly upon request by the postdoc if there is a significant change in household income or number of dependent children. Postdocs who are selected for the subsidy and subsequently drop their child(ren) dependents will be ineligible to continue to receive the award effective the date of change. Postdocs are ineligible to apply if only the spouse is covered.
Eligibility
Individuals who hold postdoctoral appointments in all Stanford schools, including SLAC, are eligible to apply. There is no citizenship requirement. You must hold a current appointment during the award period. If the appointment ends, the award will also end.
In order to be considered for the Family Healthcare Fund, a completed applicationand copy of your complete 2011 tax return (joint return or yours and spouse/domestic partner tax returns, if filed separately) must be submitted.
Eligible Expenses
The award is available to partially offset the expense to enroll children in the Stanford postdoc medical, dental and vision plans.
Ineligible Expenses
Awards are solely to offset premium increases for child(ren) dependent care and cannot be used for:
- Enrollment in non-Stanford plans
- Spouse-only coverage
- Tuition, childcare or other standard living expenses
- Research-related expenses
- COBRA coverage
- To offset insurance-related expenses that are the responsibility of the University, the Department or the faculty mentor/PI as stipulated by Stanford policy.
Application Requirements
- Complete the application form. Use the form to explain your financial circumstances and indicate your need for aid.
- Provide household income information:
- Copy of your complete 2011 tax return (joint return or yours and spouse/domestic partner tax returns, if filed separately). If tax return is not available, provide a copy of the most recent Stanford paystub. A printout from AXESS is acceptable. If you or your spouse/domestic partner filed taxes in another country, a copy of that tax return must be submitted to be eligible. If your Postdoctoral income is paid through a Fellowship, a copy of that award must be submitted for eligibility.
- Spouse/domestic partner latest paystub, if applicable. If spouse/domestic partner is not working, indicate that on the Application Form.
- Submit a completed Application Form and household income information together to the Financial Aid Office (FAO) by fax only - (650) 725-0540; Attn: Postdoc Family Healthcare Fund
- The fax is a secure system specifically for the Family Healthcare Fund. To verify all your documents are received, contact the FAO main line (650-723-3058) to speak to a counselor.
Enrollment in the Stanford University postdoctoral medical, dental and/or vision plans will be verified separately by the Award Review Committee. The Postdoc Family Healthcare Fund Award Review Committee will notify you of the status of your application or to request additional information on the Notification date below.
Postdocs who missed the deadline to apply to the Fund during the last enrollment period (November 2011) may request an award start date retroactively to January 1, 2012, on the Application Form.
