Description:
Effective communication while presenting one’s research or teaching includes not only what you say and hear, but also the types of questions you ask, or encounter.  Regardless of your discipline, this workshop will give you tools to help your communication be more refined and engaging. The goals of the workshop include: 1) broadening your conceptualizations of questions in general, 2) learning the various functions of questions, and 3) developing skills that can lead to more nuanced and fulfilling conversations and interactions, both personally and professionally.  This half-day workshop will include lecture-style presentation of information, as well as interactive small group exercises, classroom discussion, dyad work (working in pairs), and utilization of a variety of handouts related to the subject matter.

By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to learn how to:

  • Identify different types of questions.
  • Use effective and creative questions to enhance your teaching, presentation, and interview skills.
  • Answer various types of questions, including those from potential funders, advisors, critics, and colleagues.
