Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, Life Insurance, and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Postdoctoral scholars are insured under a group plan issued by Standard Insurance Company. Coverage starts on the date of appointment. This plan will work in conjunction with any other disability plan in place for the scholar (such as the VDI/STD plan available through Stanford University for scholars on salary, the Liberty Mutual Plan).
Short Term Disability Benefits
Eligibility
All enrolled full-time postdoctoral scholars earning STIPEND pay at Stanford University.
Benefit Amount
Short term disability pays 60% of basic weekly earnings to a maximum of $840 per week for a maximum of 180 days minus the length of the benefit waiting period. If disabled for less than one full week, Standard will pay one-seventh of the STD benefit for each day of disability.
Elimination Period
Benefits begin 7 days after the injury or sickness for short term disability.
Occupational Losses
Short term disability covers injuries and sicknesses caused on or off the job.
Definition of Disability
You are disabled if, as a result of sickness, injury or pregnancy, you are unable to perform with reasonable continuity the material duties of your own occupation.
Benefit Duration
As long as you continue to meet the definition of disability, you would receive a benefit until your 180th day of disability. On your 181st day of disability, you may be eligible for LTD benefits (see below).
Benefit Integration
Your benefits may be reduced by the amount of other income replacement benefits you receive, such as benefits from State Disability programs, Voluntary Disability programs (VDI), Social Security, Workers Compensation, etc.
Long Term Disability Benefits
Eligibility
All enrolled full-time postdoctoral scholars at Stanford University.
Benefit Amount
The long term disability benefit covers 50% of your monthly earnings up to a maximum monthly benefit of $2,500.
Elimination Period
Benefits begin on the 181st day for long term disability benefits
Occupational Losses
Long term disability covers injuries and sicknesses caused on or off the job.
Definition of Disability
You are disabled if, as a result of sickness, injury or pregnancy, you are unable to perform with reasonable continuity the material duties of your own occupation during the first 24 months of LTD coverage.
After the first 24 months of LTD coverage, you are disabled if, as a result of sickness, injury or pregnancy, you are unable to perform with reasonable continuity the material duties of any occupation for which you are suited due to education, training or experience.
Benefit Duration
As long as you continue to meet the definition of disability, you would be eligible to receive a benefit to the age of 65
Benefit Integration

Long Term Disability Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion
You would not be eligible to receive a LTD benefit of your disability is caused by a pre-existing condition. A pre-existing condition is one for which you:
consulted
a physician or other licensed medical professional
received
medical treatment, services or advice
undergo
diagnostic procedures, including self administered procedures
taken
prescribed drugs or medications
discovered
or suspected as a result of may medical examination, including
routine examination, or had at any time during the 30-day period
prior to your insurance becoming effective
This exclusion applies if you become disabled within the first five days of your postdoctoral scholar appointment start date.
Life Insurance
Benefit

Portability

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Benefit
The amount of your AD&D insurance benefit is equal to the amount of your life insurance benefit and is in addition to the life insurance benefit if death results from an accident, not illness. Maximum benefit $20,000.
Accelerated Death Benefit
If you are terminally ill, with a life expectancy of less than 12 months, you may receive up to 75% of your life insurance amount.
Seat Belt Benefit
The amount of the seat belt benefit is $10,000.
Career Adjustment
The tuition expenses for training incurred by your spouse within 36 months after the date of your death, exclusive of room and board, but not to exceed $2,500 per year.
Child Care Benefit
The total child care expense incurred by your spouse within 36 months after the date of your death for all children under age 13, but not to exceed $2,500 per year.
Higher Education Benefit
The tuition expenses for training incurred per child within four years after the date of your death at an accredited institution of higher education, exclusive of room and board, but not to exceed $2,500 per year.
