Benefits Information

As a Stanford postdoc, you are required to have medical insurance coverage. The Postdoc Benefits Office offers a medical plan through Blue Shield of CA. Dental and vision coverage is also offered through the Postdoc Benefits Office. Enrollment for the Blue Shield of CA Medical, Delta Dental PPO and VSP Vision plans is done through an online system called ClearBenefits (no paper enrollment forms). Enrollment is not automatic; postdoctoral scholars have to initiate their own enrollment online.

VISION SERVICE PLAN (VSP):
The Postdoc Benefits Office offers all postdoctoral scholars and their dependents a vision plan through VSP. For more information, please visit the 2012 Vision Summary .

COSTS:
Postdoctoral Scholar benefits are funded either by the application of an approved fringe benefit rate to the salaries of qualifying (50% salary or more) Postdoctoral Scholars, or by fellowship awards, or in the absence of one of these two sources, by the Scholar's faculty sponsor/department. WAIVING POSTDOC MEDICAL INSURANCE:

Postdoctoral scholars on J-1 visas are required to carry health insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents for the full duration of their J program. Specific insurance requirements can be found at the Bechtel International Center web site.

Some postdoctoral scholars choose to waive the benefits offered by Stanford and obtain coverage from a different source. In this case, a Medical Insurance Waiver Form must be filed with the Postdoc Benefits Office along with proof of other coverage (e.g., insurance card, statement of coverage, etc.). You must sign the waiver form within 31 days of your appointment start date; otherwise, your department will be charged for your medical coverage.

CARDINAL CARE/VADEN HEALTH CARE:
Please review the Cardinal Care/Vaden Center Memo regarding changes in eligibility for Cardinal Care and Vaden Health Center, effective September 1, 2009.

If you have any benefits questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please e-mail the Postdoc Benefits Office at postdocbenefits@stanford.edu.
