Benefits Information
As a Stanford postdoc, you are required to have medical insurance coverage. You have the choice between Anthem Blue Cross medical plans (offered by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs) or Cardinal Care (the University's student health care plan). Delta Dental and vision coverage is offered through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs only. Enrollment for the Anthem Blue Cross Medical, Delta Dental and VSP (vision) plans is done through an online system called BISNet (no paper enrollment forms). Enrollment is not automatic; postdoctoral scholars have to initiate their own enrollment online.
PRIVACY PRACTICES AND CONFIDENTIALITY:
We are committed to protecting the privacy of your health-related information. This notice
explains our responsibilities and your rights, in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
ANTHEM BLUE CROSS MEDICAL:
There are two Anthem Blue Cross Medical plans: HMO and PPO. See the Anthem Blue Cross Plan Overview
.
DELTAL DENTAL:
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs offers all postdoctoral scholars and their dependents
a dental plan through Delta. For more information, please visit the 2009 Delta Dental Summary
.
VISION SERVICE PLAN (VSP):
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs offers all postdoctoral scholars and their dependents a vision plan through VSP. For more information, please visit the 2009 Vision Summary
.
CARDINAL CARE:
Alternatively, you can choose to be covered through Cardinal Care, a medical
plan offered through the Vaden Health Center and administered by Aetna.
More information on Cardinal Care is detailed on the web at http://cardinalcare.stanford.edu.
If you would like information about the Vaden Health Center go to http:/vaden.stanford.edu.
COSTS:
Postdoctoral Scholar benefits are funded either by the application
of an approved fringe benefit rate to the salaries of qualifying
(50% salary or more) Postdoctoral Scholars, or by fellowship awards,
or in the absence of one of these two sources, by the Scholar's
faculty sponsor/department. For more details, please see the 2009 Insurance Rates
for medical, dental and disability/life insurance
costs, and the benefits memo from the Office of Research and Graduate Policy.
Some postdoctoral scholars choose to waive the benefits offered by Stanford and
obtain coverage from a different source. In this case, a waiver
of insurance
must be filed with the Office of
Postdoctoral Affairs along with proof of other coverage
(e.g., insurance card, statement of coverage, etc.). You must sign the waiver form within 31 days of your appointment start date;
otherwise, your department will be charged for your medical coverage.
