2014 Health Benefits Information

The 2014 Benefits Guide provides an overview of the Stanford University Postdoctoral Scholar Benefits Program. As a Stanford postdoc, you are required to have medical insurance coverage. The Postdoc Benefits Office offers two medical plans: Stanford HealthCare Alliance (SHCA) and Blue Shield PPO. The following comparison chart summarizes the key features of the medical plan options available to you and your covered dependents: SHCA and PPO Medical Plan Comparison Chart

Dental and vision coverage is also offered through the Postdoc Benefits Office. Enrollment for postdoc benefits is done through an online system called ClearBenefits (no paper enrollment forms).

STANFORD HEALTHCARE ALLIANCE (SHCA):
SHCA is a select network health insurance offering for the Stanford Community. SHCA gives you access to a true health partner, your SHCA primary care physician (PCP), who will coordinate your care throughout the SHCA network. Your must select a PCP at the time of enrollment for you and any enrolled dependents, or you will be assigned one based on your home zip code. For more information, please refer to the 2014 SHCA Summary of Benefits and Coverage

BLUE SHIELD OF CA MEDICAL PPO:
With the PPO plan, you may select any physicians and hospitals within the plan's network, as well as outside the network. Selecting the PPO plan will give you the freedom to continue seeing your current doctor, if your doctor isn't part of the Blue Shield of California network. For more information, please refer to the 2014 PPO Summary of Benefits and Coverage.

WAIVING POSTDOC MEDICAL INSURANCE:
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which becomes effective January 1, 2014, requires that postdocs have health insurance coverage that meets a minimum federal standard, as Stanford’s postdoc plans do.    If you waive medical insurance offered to you through the Postdoctoral Scholar Benefits Program, you must provide proof that you have a qualifying medical insurance policy that meets the ACA federal standards.  Waivers will only be permitted in very limited instances.

Postdoctoral scholars on J-1 visas are required to carry health insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents for the full duration of their J program. Specific insurance requirements can be found at the Bechtel International Center web site.

POSTDOC ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:
The GuidanceResources Postdoctoral Assistance Program (PAP) offers support, guidance and resources that can help you resolve personal issues and meet life’s challenges. This service is provided at no additional cost to you. For more information, please refer to the Postdoc Assistance Program Brochure.

STANFORD HELP CENTER:
The Stanford Help Center provides professional, confidential, short-term counseling on-site to Staff, Faculty, and Postdocs. They are located at the Mariposa House on campus, with satellite offices at Stanford Hospital, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and in San Jose. All SHC services are offered free of charge, up to 10 sessions for each postdoc and eligible dependents. For more information, please visit the Stanford Help Center website.

DELTA DENTAL PPO:
The Postdoc Benefits Office offers all postdoctoral scholars and their dependents a dental plan through Delta Dental. For more information, please refer to the 2014 Delta Dental PPO Summary.

VISION SERVICE PLAN (VSP):
The Postdoc Benefits Office offers all postdoctoral scholars and their dependents a vision plan through VSP. For more information, please refer to the 2014 Vision Summary.

HEALTH PREMIUM COSTS:
Please see the 2014 Monthly Health Insurance Rates and the benefits memo from the Office of Research and Graduate Policy. You will be required to enter your bank account information into ClearBenefits, the online enrollment website, upon enrollment into a benefit plan that requires Postdoc contributions.

Postdoctoral Scholar's "institutional costs/allowance" are funded either by the application of an approved fringe benefit rate to the salaries of qualifying (50% salary or more) Postdoctoral Scholars, or by fellowship awards, or in the absence of one of these two sources, by the Scholar's faculty sponsor/department.

DEPENDENT ELIGIBILITY DOCUMENTATION:
If you enroll a dependent, the Postdoc Benefits Office requires proof of dependent eligibility for the dependents you cover.
